I don’t want my essay to sound like everyone else’s

People often worry that their application essay doesn’t stand out enough – that what they’ve done (gotten good grades, been involved in sports and community service, etc) sounds just like what everyone else has done. Well, think about all the movies and books that have the same plot – unlikely couple meets, falls in love, get separated, end up together again. How many are there? Ten? A hundred? A thousand? And yet we keep seeing the movies and reading the books because each one is different in the details – different characters, different setting, different challenges.
There could be a thousand students with your exact same GPA and number of extra-curriculars, but no two of you are alike because of the details of your experiences. Put those details into your essay.
